Description:
The Vancouver School Board (VSB) is inviting applications for On-Call Custodians to join its custodial team. This role plays a vital part in ensuring that school facilities are clean, safe, and well-maintained to support a positive learning environment for students and staff. The position offers flexible, on-call work with regular assignments available throughout the year, making it a busy and rewarding opportunity for those who are reliable and committed.
Custodians are responsible for performing a wide range of cleaning and maintenance tasks, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, sanitizing washrooms, emptying trash receptacles, and ensuring that classrooms, hallways, and common areas meet cleanliness and safety standards. In addition, custodians may be asked to assist with minor repairs, set up rooms for school events, and ensure facilities are secured at the end of shifts. Strong communication skills, the ability to work independently as well as within a team, and flexibility to accept assignments on short notice are essential for success in this role.
Shifts during the school year (September to June) generally run from 2:30 pm to 10:30 pm or from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm. During summer and winter breaks, shifts are typically scheduled from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. This position is ideal for those with availability across varying schedules.
Applicants must have completed Grade 12 and hold a Building Service Worker (BSW) Certificate, preferably from Burnaby Continuing Education, Vancouver Community College, or Delta Continuing Education. A minimum of two years’ relevant custodial/janitorial experience is required. For those seeking permanent positions within the VSB, additional qualifications such as a 4th or 5th Class Power Engineering Certificate will be necessary, which can open career advancement opportunities into roles such as Assistant Head Custodian, Head Custodian, or Assistant Building Engineer.
The Vancouver School Board is recognized as one of Canada’s most diverse school systems, serving students from a wide variety of cultural and social backgrounds. The district emphasizes equity, inclusivity, student well-being, and academic success. Custodians play a critical role in supporting this mission by ensuring schools provide safe, healthy, and welcoming environments for learning.
