Machinist

Description:

British Columbia Rapid Transit Company Ltd. (BCRTC), operator of the Expo and Millennium SkyTrain Lines, is seeking a skilled Machinist to join its Support Shops team. The machinist will perform a wide range of machining tasks, including machining wheels, axles, truck components, specialty tools, and fabricating or repairing various equipment and components essential for the operation of one of the world’s longest fully-automated rapid transit systems.

This role involves working independently or under supervision, performing troubleshooting, conducting equipment repairs, and making technical recommendations to improve procedures and equipment performance.

Key Responsibilities:

• Operate manual lathes, milling machines, grinders, and computer-controlled machining equipment to repair and fabricate components.

• Machine wheels, axles, truck parts, and specialty tools based on drawings and specifications.

• Perform troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of machining equipment including wheel press and lathe.

• Interpret and prepare blueprints, maintenance manuals, and procedures.

• Provide guidance to staff and coordinate with contractors/vendors as needed.

• Complete documentation of materials, time, and tests performed.

• Ensure compliance with safety standards and handle emergencies as per procedures.

Qualifications & Skills:

• Red Seal Certification as a Machinist

• Minimum 5 years of machining experience, preferably in rail maintenance or related industry

• Proficiency in interpreting blueprints and technical specifications

• Ability to operate a range of manual and CNC machining tools

• Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License

• Strong teamwork and problem-solving skills

Compensation & Benefits:

• Wage: $56.47 per hour

• Initial trainee rate: 75% of hourly rate for first 6 weeks; 90% for remainder of first year
