Clinic Staff Lawyer

Description:

Okanagan Thompson Legal Clinic is seeking a dedicated and passionate Clinic Staff Lawyer to join their team and provide free legal services and education to communities across the Okanagan Thompson area. This role supports the organization's mission of increasing access to justice for marginalized populations through a trauma-informed and client-centered approach.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the successful candidate will represent clients across various legal matters and provide legal education, mentoring, and community outreach. This is a hybrid position, with flexibility to work remotely and a requirement to attend the clinic offices in Kamloops and Kelowna when necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide legal advice and representation to clients in the areas of human rights, employment, small claims, judicial reviews, and debt claims

• Conduct client intake interviews and legal research

• Appear in court and lead public legal education sessions, including webinars

• Supervise articling students, including review of draft pleadings, research, and legal correspondence

• Maintain client files and manage case documentation through Clio (preferred)

• Work collaboratively with other legal staff to deliver effective legal support to underserved populations

Qualifications:

• Law degree (LL.B, JD, or NCA)

• Licensed or eligible for licensure with the Law Society of British Columbia

• Minimum 1 year of legal experience

• Knowledge of human rights and employment law; experience with judicial reviews essential

• Experience with immigration law and Clio is an asset

• Demonstrated ability to work with Indigenous and gender-diverse communities

• Valid BC driver’s license preferred

• Willingness to undergo a Police Information Check upon offer
