Description:
The Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority (APSEA), a leading organization dedicated to supporting children and youth who are Deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or with low vision across Atlantic Canada, is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Library Technician to join its team at the APSEA Central Office in Halifax, NS.

In this role, you will play a vital part in providing access to educational materials in multiple formats, managing library resources, and ensuring that learners receive the support they need to succeed.
Working under the supervision of the Supervisor of Production and Library Services, the Library Technician will manage library operations, facilitate the production and distribution of alternate format materials, and collaborate with a wide network of educators, learners, and partner organizations to maintain an accessible and efficient library system.
Manage the circulation and organization of library materials including shelving, cataloguing, relocating, and maintaining inventory and stock levels.
Process loans, renewals, holds, and returns for both print and digital materials using an Integrated Library System (ILS).
Issue overdue notices, maintain accurate records, and ensure timely processing of interlibrary loans with departments of education and Canadian Accessible Educational Resources (CAER) agencies.
Coordinate and facilitate the production of alternate format educational materials by validating requests, selecting appropriate formats, and liaising with internal and external teams.
Manage and organize digital assets, ensuring compliance with copyright legislation, including Section 32.1 of the Canadian Copyright Act.
Assist staff and users in accessing and navigating library systems, databases, and available services.
Provide tours and demonstrations of library equipment and processes when required.
Perform original and copy cataloguing using Resource Description and Access (RDA) standards, Dewey Decimal Classification, and Library of Congress Subject Headings.
Utilize cataloguing tools such as OCLC Z39.50, Voilà (Library and Archives Canada), and other online databases.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, ensuring efficient handling of materials weighing up to 35 pounds.
Education: Diploma in Library and Information Technology (required); undergraduate degree is an asset.
Experience: Minimum one year in a library environment (asset).
Technical Knowledge:
Familiarity with MARC cataloguing, Dewey Decimal Classification, RDA standards, and Library of Congress Authorities.
Proficiency in bibliographic searches and the use of library management systems.
Soft Skills:
Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
Strong attention to detail with accuracy in proofreading and recordkeeping.
Strong communication skills—both written and oral.
Ability to work independently or collaboratively while maintaining confidentiality.
Interpersonal skills to foster positive and professional relationships.
Additional Assets:
Willingness to undertake Unified English Braille (UEB) training.
Knowledge of French is considered an asset.
Salary range: $45,125.60 – $52,541.32 per year (as per the APSEA/NSGEU Collective Agreement).
