Classroom Volunteer

Description:

Volunteer Success, in collaboration with ISANS (Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia), is seeking dedicated Classroom Volunteers to support instructors and learners in programs designed to assist newcomers in building their futures in Nova Scotia. Volunteers are particularly needed in literacy-focused programs, where they play a key role in creating an inclusive, encouraging learning environment.

Classroom Volunteers help instructors deliver effective sessions, providing one-on-one or small group support to clients who may be working on skills such as letter formation, basic numeracy, reading, and speaking practice. Volunteers also participate in role plays, assist clients in developing learning strategies, and acknowledge and respect the diverse skills and experiences clients bring with them.

This opportunity provides volunteers with the chance to make a direct, meaningful impact on the lives of newcomers, while also gaining valuable experience in community service, cross-cultural communication, and adult education support.

Key Responsibilities:

• Support instructors using provided classroom materials

• Work closely with one or two clients based on similar learning needs

• Assist learners in literacy-related activities (reading, writing, counting, speaking)

• Participate in role plays to model speaking and conversation activities

• Encourage clients’ learning strategies and confidence building

• Foster a respectful, inclusive, and supportive environment

Time Commitment:

• Minimum of one consistent class per week

• Class times: 9:00 am – 11:30 am OR 12:30 pm – 3:00 pm

• Duration: 3 months to 1 year

• Morning and early afternoon sessions available

Qualifications:

• Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 4 or higher – written and spoken

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills

• Commitment, patience, and willingness to support adult learners

• Respect for diversity and inclusive values

There may be a waiting list for placement, and new volunteer intake could be temporarily paused depending on program demand.
