Description:

The Salvation Army in Canada, a faith-based organization serving communities for over 130 years, is seeking a compassionate and organized Community Ministry Assistant to join their Gibsons, BC branch. This role plays a key part in delivering front-line support through the Food Bank, Hope Café, and community meal programs — providing meaningful assistance to individuals and families in need.

As a Community Ministry Assistant, you will contribute to The Salvation Army’s mission of sharing hope, meeting human needs, and being a transforming influence in the community. This position is well-suited for someone who demonstrates empathy, integrity, and a strong commitment to community service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide emergency food hampers to clients as directed by counselors or supervisors.

  • Assist in organizing and maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of the Food Bank and Hope Café.

  • Receive, sort, and organize non-monetary donations or purchased goods in accordance with established procedures.

  • Support the Community Meal Program and ensure that all refreshments and café areas are properly set up and maintained.

  • Direct and assist volunteers working within the Food Bank or meal services.

  • Maintain accurate records, client files, and statistics as required.

  • Ensure safe handling and disposal of materials and adherence to health and safety standards.

  • Operate POS terminals, handle small amounts of cash, and support administrative tasks.

  • Perform other assigned duties as needed to support community operations.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Education: Completion of Grade 12.

  • Experience: Up to 3 months of experience in community service, food bank operations, or working with individuals facing multiple barriers.

  • Certifications & Requirements:

    • Background check and clear vulnerable sector screening.

    • Clean driver’s abstract.

    • Completion of Armatus Abuse Prevention and Health & Safety Training (provided by The Salvation Army).

  • Skills & Competencies:

    • Strong communication, empathy, and interpersonal skills.

    • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.

    • Ability to work collaboratively with staff and volunteers in a supportive, team-oriented environment.

    • Respect for The Salvation Army’s mission, culture, and Christian values.

    • Attention to detail, integrity, and confidentiality.

    • Multilingual abilities (English, Arabic, or other languages) considered an asset.

Working Conditions:

  • On-site role within an office, thrift store, or sorting room environment.

  • May require extended standing and moderate lifting (up to 30 lbs).

  • Reports directly to the Executive Director.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Hourly Rate: $17.85 – $20.64 (up to $24.77 maximum).

  • Placement within the range is determined by experience, skills, and internal equity.
