Description:

The University of British Columbia is seeking a visionary and highly skilled Associate Vice President, Communications to lead the university’s institutional communications strategy within the External Relations portfolio. This senior leadership role reports directly to the Vice-President, External Relations, and works closely with the university’s executive leadership team.

The Associate Vice President (AVP) will be instrumental in shaping and enhancing UBC’s global reputation through a comprehensive and integrated approach to communications. This includes overseeing key functions such as marketing, media relations, digital communications, and brand management. The AVP will serve as a trusted advisor and spokesperson for the university, offering strategic counsel on complex and sensitive issues, including crisis communications and stakeholder engagement.

In this role, the AVP Communications will design and implement initiatives that:

  • Strengthen UBC’s brand positioning locally, nationally, and internationally

  • Enhance internal engagement among staff, faculty, and students

  • Improve the university’s external visibility and influence across multiple platforms and audiences

The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional strategic marketing and communications expertise gained in large, complex, and high-profile environments. They must have a proven track record of:

  • Leading and developing diverse teams of communications professionals

  • Managing issues and crisis communications effectively

  • Building strong relationships with key stakeholders and media

  • Crafting innovative brand strategies that align with organizational goals
