The City of Beaumont is seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented Building Safety Codes Officer to support the delivery of safe, compliant residential development. This role focuses on residential buildings, garages, accessory structures, and small buildings governed under Part 9 of the Building Code. Reporting to the Team Lead, Safety Codes, you will provide technical guidance, conduct site inspections, review permit applications and building plans, issue permits, and enforce applicable safety codes. Through your work, you will play a vital role in maintaining building safety, code compliance, and construction quality across our growing community.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Administers and enforces the Safety Codes Act and related regulations.
- Investigates public concerns to determine cause/effect and preventative measures.
- Conduct site inspections at various construction stages to check for compliance and identify deficiencies.
- Follow up on identified issues through re-inspections or enforcement actions as necessary.
- Enforce standards for unsafe conditions and unpermitted work.
- Offer technical advice and direction to help applicants find acceptable solutions for compliance
- Evaluate and make decisions on Alternative Solution and Variance requests based on safety and code equivalence.
- Reviews permit applications and issues permits to ensure compliance with relevant codes.
What YOU bring:
- Journeyman carpenter, plumber, electrician, sheet metal worker, or bricklayer certification recognized in Alberta with a minimum of three (3) years’ journeyman experience in the construction of residential buildings OR
- Two (2) year technology diploma in a related field of equivalent recognized in Canada and seven (7) years of relevant experience in the building construction industry.
- Registered Building Safety Code Officer in the Province of Alberta having completed “Residential”, “Residential HVAC”, “Part 9”is required.
- Comprehensive knowledge of building codes, the National Energy Code, standard and specialized construction methods and materials.
- Demonstrated internal and external customer service skills including the ability to build and maintain relationships with industry partners.
- Ability to stay current with evolving codes and construction methods through ongoing training.
- Practical knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office and permitting software.
- Demonstrated time management, organizational, and decision-making ability.
- Competency in reviewing plans and coordinating with interested parties.
- Ability to effectively resolve issues and attain corrective measures.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license.
