Permanent Caretaker

The Renfrew County Catholic District School Board is seeking a Permanent Caretaker (0.5 FTE) to maintain a clean, safe, and well-functioning school environment. Reporting to the Manager of Plant Services or designate, the Caretaker will be responsible for cleaning all areas of the building, ensuring safety standards are met, assisting with minor maintenance, and performing regular inspections of facilities and equipment.

Key duties include sweeping, mopping, waxing, and buffing floors; vacuuming; cleaning walls, windows, washrooms, and fixtures; handling garbage and recycling; sanding, salting, and shoveling outdoor walkways; performing monthly safety checks (fire alarms, emergency lighting, extinguishers, etc.); assisting with school events and community use; monitoring heating, cooling, and lighting systems; ensuring WHMIS compliance; and maintaining custodial equipment. The role also requires preparing the school for inspections, performing minor repairs, and maintaining supply inventories.

The successful candidate must have completed an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, possess at least one year of relevant janitorial experience, be physically able to perform manual tasks (lifting up to 50 lbs.), and have reliable transportation. Knowledge of building, fire, and occupational safety codes, HVAC, plumbing, electrical basics, and yard maintenance is an asset. Strong communication skills, teamwork ability, and comfort with basic computer use are essential.

The position is unionized under CUPE Local 1202 and requires availability to work flexible hours. Mileage reimbursement applies for assignments outside designated locations. A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Criminal Background Check is required prior to employment.
