Description:
As a Psychiatrist in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), you will play a critical role in providing clinical mental health care to CAF members, working closely with primary healthcare providers and multidisciplinary teams. Your responsibilities will include diagnosing, managing treatment plans, and offering expert consultation on mental health-related matters. You will support military operations by providing care to members in remote locations through telepsychiatry and be involved in both domestic and international missions.
You will contribute to the development and implementation of mental health policies and provide valuable guidance on operational readiness assessments and work restrictions related to mental health.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Care: Provide diagnostic assessments and follow-up care, especially focusing on medication management.
Collaboration: Work alongside multidisciplinary teams, including mental health clinicians and primary care providers, to ensure optimal patient care.
Advisory: Offer expert recommendations to local and regional military health leaders.
Policy Development: Contribute to policy creation related to mental health within the CAF.
Work Environment:
Psychiatrists in the CAF work in mental health clinics located on military bases across Canada, collaborating with primary care clinicians and being part of a multidisciplinary team. They may also be deployed internationally or work remotely with telepsychiatry services. CAF psychiatrists may also be involved in military training and operations.
Training and Career Development:
Upon enlistment, you will complete basic officer training at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.
Medical professionals, including psychiatrists, will attend the Basic Medical Officer Course to learn about military structure, leadership, and basic medical military practices.
Opportunities for further specialization, including postgraduate study programs and the chance to participate in aviation medicine training, are available based on career progression.
