Block, Inc., a leading financial technology company, is seeking a motivated, organized, and innovative lawyer to join its growing legal team as International Counsel for Canada. In this remote role, you will provide comprehensive legal and strategic guidance primarily for the Afterpay business, as well as support select Square initiatives within the Canadian market. This is a unique opportunity to work within a fast-evolving regulatory environment while leveraging cutting-edge AI-driven tools to enhance legal processes.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for advising on complex regulatory, product, and commercial legal matters across a range of initiatives in the Buy Now, Pay Later, payments, and financial services sectors. You will play a central role in shaping and ensuring compliance with Canadian regulations while contributing to innovative financial solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead regulatory strategy and implementation under the Retail Payment Activities Act and other Canadian regulations.

  • Advise on compliance frameworks, governance programs, regulatory reporting, and federal/provincial engagement (e.g., Bank of Canada, Department of Finance).

  • Support product, design, and engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle, including drafting product policies, terms of use, and disclosures.

  • Provide legal guidance on lending, payments, credit advancement, consumer protection, privacy, marketing, and financial services regulations.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements.

  • Collaborate with internal teams including compliance, risk, operations, tax, and finance to ensure integrated legal support.

  • Utilize AI tools to optimize legal workflows, enhance efficiency, and support business growth.

Qualifications:

  • Law degree and active membership with the Law Society of Ontario (or equivalent provincial body).

  • 3–6 years of relevant legal experience, preferably in lending, payments, or financial services.

  • Strong knowledge of Canadian financial and payments regulations.

  • Excellent legal judgment and ability to provide practical business-focused guidance.

  • Strong project management skills and ability to meet tight deadlines.

  • Proven experience supporting innovative product development in a changing regulatory landscape.
