The Alberta Energy Regulator is currently hiring a permanent Senior Advisor, Dam Safety Engineer. Come join a great team of professionals who are passionate about making a positive impact on Alberta’s energy sector.

As Senior Advisor, Dam Safety Engineer, you will provide technical leadership on challenging geotechnical issues to the AER. You will design and implement enhancements to the AER’s dam safety operational plan. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to engage and educate all levels of AER leadership and other stakeholders within the Government of Alberta on current and emerging dam safety trends and concerns.

Our ideal candidate is an expert geotechnical engineer with extensive experience in dam safety engineering who is passionate about the sustainable development of Alberta’s energy resources.

Relocation support for this position will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

What your day-to-day will look like:
 

  • Influence direction and inform AER decision makers by engaging with external stakeholders (e.g., dam operators, Alberta Environment and Park, academia, etc.) to solicit information on opportunities and challenges facing the dam safety community.
  • Provide technical leadership and advice to the AER on the most complex geotechnical issues in Alberta’s energy sector related to the full-life cycle of dams.
  • Champion the AER’s Dam Safety Program and provide technical oversight. Develop a strategy for the continued enhancement of the program.
  • Mentor and coach staff. Collaborate with the Principal Engineer to build and develop a technical excellence program for Dam Safety. Design and implement training programs to further staff development.
  • Analyze and communicate performance trends of operators and the AER’s dam safety program. Present findings and technical reports to executive leadership and external stakeholders to provide clarity, influence direction and improve performance.
  • Promote a collaborative and enterprise-first approach.
     

What we’re looking for in you:
 

  • M.Sc. in Geological, Mining, or Civil Engineering is preferred. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) is required.
  • Minimum 15+ years of related experience in geotechnical engineering with a minimum of 5 years of experience on the design, construction and operation of earthfill water and tailings dams.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Alberta Dam and Canal Safety Directive and related legislation.
  • Knowledge and experience with the Canadian Dam Association (CDA) Dam Safety Guidelines and Bulletins, and the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) tailings management guidelines.
  • Working knowledge of industry standard geotechnical software packages.
  • Experience mentoring staff and developing technical training strategies.
