Claims Officer

Description:

The Government of Alberta is seeking a Claims Officer to join the Third-Party Liability (TPL) Unit within the Strategic Planning and Performance Division of the Health System Value Branch. This role is focused on recovering the Crown’s health care costs related to personal injury matters under the Crown’s Right of Recovery Act. The position is temporary full-time and based in Edmonton, Alberta.

Responsibilities:

• Recover health service costs incurred by the Crown for personal injuries caused by third parties, up to $75,000.

• Collaborate with Alberta Justice, insurance companies across Canada and the U.S., legal professionals, and the public.

• Apply knowledge of personal injury principles, insurance law, and the Crown’s Right of Recovery Act.

• Maintain accurate records, coordinate processes, and ensure compliance with relevant statutes and unit policies.

• Support project work, provide administrative assistance, and contribute to strategic initiatives within the TPL Unit.

Requirements:

• University graduation in Insurance, Law, Medical claims, or related field (or equivalent experience/education).

• Strong planning, coordination, records management, and problem-solving skills.

• Understanding of legal terminology, lawsuit procedures, and insurance policies.

• Effective communication skills (written and oral) and strong critical thinking, negotiation, and attention to detail.

• Ability to prioritize workload, cope with changing priorities, and meet tight deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of Alberta’s Health Information Act, Insurance Act, Limitations of Actions Act, and Crown’s Right of Recovery Act.

• Familiarity with personal injury claims and insurance law.

• Experience in administrative support, project coordination, and interdepartmental collaboration.
