Animal Health Technician

 

Description:

The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a leading biomedical and hospital research center affiliated with McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine. This position supports the Animal Resources Division by performing technical, animal care, and administrative duties related to laboratory animals used in research.

Under general supervision, the Animal Health Technician is responsible for animal health observations, physical examinations, diagnostic tests, treatments, and surgical care preparations. The role includes training Principal Investigators (PIs) and research staff, ensuring animal welfare, and maintaining necessary inventory and equipment.

This part-time, on-call position requires weekend, holiday, or vacation coverage shifts starting at 8 a.m., with flexibility according to division requirements.


Responsibilities:

  • Observe and perform physical examinations of laboratory animals

  • Identify, record, and report animal health issues to Veterinarians and research staff

  • Administer treatments and diagnostic tests as prescribed

  • Prepare equipment and supplies for surgical procedures and provide pre/post-op care

  • Train and orient PIs and research staff on animal care protocols

  • Conduct routine and specialized laboratory animal techniques

  • Perform husbandry and technical duties to maintain animal welfare

  • Manage inventory of materials, medications, and equipment

  • Operate and monitor lab equipment and instruments

  • Perform administrative tasks including data entry, scheduling, and coordinating meetings or training


Required Qualifications:

  • D.E.C. diploma specializing in Animal Health Technology (Program 145.A0, 2730 hours) recognized by the Ordre des médecins vétérinaires du Québec

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize and multitask under minimal supervision

  • Proficient in computer applications: Windows, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet

  • Bilingual: proficient in French and English (spoken and written)

  • Adaptability and versatility


Preferred / Asset Qualifications:

  • Experience with large research animal models

  • CALAS-AALAS Certification or equivalent


Work Conditions and Benefits:

  • Temporary, part-time, occasional (on call) status with varying hours

  • Shift starts at 8:00 a.m., including weekends, holidays, and vacation replacements

  • Paid sick leave: 3 days per year including 1 personal day

  • Participation in RREGOP government pension plan (defined benefit)

  • Prorated vacation pay

  • 5.3% gross earnings added in lieu of statutory holidays
