Accessible Transit Bus Driver

 

Description:

The Region of Peel is seeking Accessible Transit Bus Drivers (TransHelp Operators) to provide essential, door-to-door transportation services that empower residents with disabilities to travel without barriers and maintain their independence. As a TransHelp Operator, you will ensure safe, reliable, and respectful transportation, making a direct impact on the daily lives of passengers by enabling them to access essential services, appointments, and community activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct pre- and post-shift vehicle inspections (circle checks) and log all details.

  • Log into the Automatic Vehicle Locator (AVL) system at the beginning and end of shifts and maintain communication with dispatch throughout.

  • Interpret schedules, plan routes, and safely transport passengers to their destinations.

  • Assist passengers in boarding, exiting, and securing mobility aids/accessories as required.

  • Execute duties with courtesy, professionalism, and respect.

  • Ensure adherence to all company policies and passenger guidelines.

  • Respond promptly and effectively to emergency situations with minimal supervision.

Key Requirements:

  • Valid Ontario Vehicle Operator's permit class B, C, E or F license (Z endorsement is an asset) with a clean driving record (current driver abstract required).

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent education.

  • At least six months of related experience.

  • Experience in accessibility accommodation is an asset.

  • Strong communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.

  • Physical ability to perform duties (pushing, pulling, bending).

  • Training in First Aid, CPR, and defensive driving preferred.

  • Good map-reading and route navigation skills.

  • Must successfully complete TransHelp Driver Operator training during probation.

  • Must pass a Vulnerable Sector Search screening.
