Description:

Brunel University London, a leading multidisciplinary research-intensive university established in 1966, is seeking a Senior Technician (Environmental Biology) to support its Environmental Sciences’ biology facilities. The position plays a vital role in maintaining, supervising, and enhancing the research and teaching infrastructure of the university’s biology laboratories.

The successful candidate will work as part of the Environmental Sciences Technical Services Team, ensuring all laboratory operations are efficient, compliant with safety regulations, and supportive of both student and research activities. The role requires a technically skilled, safety-conscious professional with strong communication abilities and an excellent attention to detail.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Environmental Biology research laboratories.

  • Train and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students working in the labs.

  • Ensure health and safety compliance, enforcing proper laboratory practices at all times.

  • Maintain and operate laboratory equipment and facilities to high technical standards.

  • Support grant-funded and contract-based research work, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.

  • Assist in related work areas, such as chemistry laboratories, practical classes, and fieldwork.

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously with a commitment to precision and timelines.

  • Occasionally work outside normal hours as required to support ongoing projects.


Essential Qualifications and Skills:

  • GCSE Maths and English (Grade C or equivalent).

  • Prior work experience in biological or environmental science laboratories.

  • Proficiency in one or more of the following techniques:

    • Cell culture

    • In-vitro assays

    • ELISA

    • (Eco)toxicology testing

    • Molecular biology methods

    • Western blotting

    • Histology

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

  • Ability to maintain a safe, professional, and collaborative laboratory environment.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with environmental biology fieldwork.

  • Familiarity with environmental and pollution research methods.


Compensation and Benefits:

  • Annual salary: £34,145 – £38,638, with progression up to £40,757.
