Senior Project Engineer

 

Description:

Metro Vancouver is seeking a Senior Project Engineer, Cost Control to join their Project Controls Division within the Project Delivery Department. This role is essential to supporting High Value, Risk and Consequence projects, ensuring strict cost management, accurate forecasting, and proactive cost-control strategies are implemented across large-scale infrastructure developments.

The selected candidate will be responsible for leading cost tracking, scope management, and value of work performed reporting across multiple contracts and project teams. You will use your analytical skills to evaluate trends and develop accurate cost forecasts, define corrective actions, and engage contractors in budget adherence.

The role demands technical leadership, decision-making, project oversight, and the ability to guide others through complex engineering and financial challenges while upholding Metro Vancouver’s standards of excellence in public infrastructure projects.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement best-practice cost tracking and value of work reporting for all contracts and consultants

  • Develop detailed and accurate cost forecasts based on project progress and trends

  • Assess contingency use and recommend appropriate reallocations

  • Define and initiate preventive or corrective actions to prevent cost overruns

  • Oversee large project budgets and ensure cost-effective use of allocated funds

  • Participate in both short-term and long-range project planning

  • Prepare and review project designs, technical documents, and contract specifications

  • Represent Metro Vancouver in site inspections, regulatory compliance, and project meetings

  • Guide consultants on scope changes and negotiate contractual terms

  • Coordinate with stakeholders including public bodies, regulatory agencies, and municipalities

  • Mentor junior engineers and provide peer reviews for internal and consultant work

  • Provide expert support for board presentations and public communications

  • Contribute to policy development on engineering and infrastructure matters


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Applied Science in a relevant engineering discipline

  • 4–6 years of related experience on major infrastructure projects (post-P.Eng. registration)

  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC

  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and technical guidelines

  • Advanced project management and contract administration skills

  • Excellent communication skills—written, verbal, and presentation

  • Proven ability to manage complex, large-scale projects independently

  • Effective problem-solving, decision-making, and interpersonal skills

  • Team-oriented with mentoring and leadership capabilities

  • Proficient in MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Project)

  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License
