Research Technologist

The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Research Technologist I to join the Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (CEES) team. This position provides an exciting opportunity to support applied research focused on improving environmental and economic performance within the oil sands and mining industries. The CEES team operates in NAIT’s state-of-the-art research laboratory located in the Productivity and Innovation Centre and works collaboratively with businesses and industries to bridge the gap between research innovation and real-world implementation.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about applied research, eager to learn laboratory techniques, and capable of performing routine and specialized testing within a multidisciplinary scientific environment.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform laboratory analyses including Dean & Stark analysis, particle size distribution (wet sieve and laser diffraction), Methylene Blue Index testing, Atterberg limits, vane yield strength measurements, and flocculation and water quality analysis.

  • Collect, enter, and report experimental data accurately in support of applied research projects.

  • Capture learnings from test methods and contribute to developing and improving Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Assist with training students and staff on laboratory techniques and procedures.

  • Participate in meetings with senior researchers to review and interpret data.

  • Perform cleaning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment as required.

  • Support safety and quality standards within the research environment.


Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interest in scientific research and environmental sustainability.

  • Familiarity with oil sands industry and relevant material characterization techniques is considered an asset.

  • Comfortable working across multiple disciplines and adapting to varied testing methods.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook).

  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.

  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented with strong problem-solving abilities.

  • Preference given to candidates with prior NAIT experience.


Qualifications:

  • Technical diploma in a relevant field (e.g., Chemical Technology, Civil Technology, or related discipline).

  • Minimum 1 year of related technical or laboratory experience.

  • International applicants must have their credentials assessed by World Education Services (WES) or International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).


Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary range: CAD 1,635.44 – CAD 2,080.31 bi-weekly.
