Siksika Nation has an opportunity for a Junior Draftsperson to join their Engineering Services team to successfully deliver projects. Draftspersons at SNES work in offices and on-site, helping design and update plans for infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, and water systems. Their fieldwork involves site visits, surveys, and inspections, often in rural areas and various weather conditions. They collaborate with engineers, project managers, and Siksika leaders to ensure designs meet community needs and sustainability goals. Their challenges include extreme weather, coordination with stakeholders, and compliance with funding requirements, highlighting their vital role in Siksika’s infrastructure development.
The Junior Draftsperson works with the Senior Draftsperson collaborating on engineering designs, detailed drawings, and technical documentation for both residential and commercial construction projects. This position requires an understanding of architectural and engineering principles, as well as experience in CAD software to produce high-quality designs.
The ideal candidate should possess a strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering accurate and timely drawings.
Collaboration is key in this role, the junior Draftsperson will work closely with architects, engineers, and other professionals across multiple disciplines. Maintaining high standards of quality, is essential for success in this position.
Supervision Received: Reports to the Senior Draftsperson, Siksika Engineering Services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Drafting & Design:
- Engage in the preparation of engineering designs and detailed drawings, utilizing preliminary concepts, sketches, rigorous engineering calculations, and specific project specifications as foundational materials.
- Capable to generate 2D and 3D drawings, accompanying charts and schedules, ensuring that as-built drawings accurately reflect field adjustments made through red-line markups.
- Draft structural steel drawings, including piling layouts, detailed concrete layouts, and building drawings that meet industry standards.
- Produces civil engineering drawings that encapsulate the necessary features for infrastructure projects.
- Building Information Models (BIM), collaborating with the multidimensional approach to design and project management.
- Create engineering drawings specifically tailored for both production and manufacturing processes.
- Work with the team to devise innovative designs and layouts
Technical Documentation & Analysis:
- Work with the team to complete documentation packages, including design specifications, material lists, and technical reports.
- Verify drawings are correct and according to specifications, codes, and other regulations are correct.
- Check and verify design drawings to conform to specifications and design data.
- Record and file stick files, forms and Material Take offs (MTOs) .
Collaboration & Supervision:
- Collaborate with engineers, architects, project managers, and other team members to review and refine designs.
- Potentially direct the work of junior designers/drafters, providing guidance and instruction.
- Work within a multi-disciplinary team including Process, Mechanical, Civil, Structural & Architectural, Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls and Piping.
- Collaborate with the design team to review drawings and designs.
- Make adjustments to drawings according to feedback from engineers or architects.
Compliance & Quality:
- Ensure designs comply with company regulations, quality standards, and relevant building codes.
- Assure that work complies with the accuracy level and time constraints required for the assignment.
- Setting up drawing formats and configuration files
Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Minimum of 2+ years of experience as a design draftsman, preferably in residential and/or commercial construction.
- AutoCAD and other relevant CAD software, including 3D modeling tools (e.g., SketchUp).
- Strong understanding of architectural and engineering design principles.
- Solid math and analytical skills.
- Excellent knowledge of construction materials and methods.
- Ability to interpret and apply building codes and regulations.
- Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
