Human Trafficking Crisis Counsellor

 

Description:

Victim Services of Durham Region (VSDR) is seeking a Human Trafficking Crisis Counsellor to join their dedicated team. This full-time permanent position offers an opportunity to make a direct impact by providing trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and culturally responsive crisis support to individuals affected by human trafficking.

The successful candidate will play a vital role in delivering compassionate care, ensuring that survivors receive immediate crisis intervention, advocacy, and coordinated referrals for ongoing support. The role requires an individual who is empathetic, resilient, and capable of working in emotionally charged situations while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide crisis intervention via phone and in-person, including case management, intake, needs assessments, safety planning, and community referrals.

  • Deliver short-term emotional support through active listening, validation, and empowerment of survivors’ autonomy and choice.

  • Coordinate with community agencies and partner organizations to facilitate seamless access to long-term support services.

  • Complete eligibility assessments and prepare applications for survivor assistance programs (e.g., Victim Quick Response Program).

  • Manage assigned cases effectively, maintaining organized documentation and confidentiality at all times.

  • Participate in on-call rotations, offering support during evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

  • Uphold trauma-informed and equity-based principles across all service interactions.


Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Education: Diploma or degree in Social Service Work, Social Work (BSW), or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience: Proven background in trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, and anti-oppressive practice.

  • Skills and Competencies:

    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with survivors, police, and community partners.

    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively.

    • Knowledge of community and government support systems.

    • Proficiency in MS Office applications.

    • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression, and inclusion principles.

  • Other Requirements:

    • Valid Ontario driver’s license, vehicle insurance, and access to a reliable car.

    • Residency in Durham Region to fulfill on-call obligations.

    • Satisfactory Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Checks required prior to employment.
