Geological Technologist

 

Description:

The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS), a branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), is recruiting for a Geological Technologist, Geoscience Support position. This full-time, permanent role requires a solid understanding of surface and subsurface geology data and managing large volumes of data from multiple sources. The position focuses on supporting technical experts in delivering products and operational activities by collecting, maintaining, and distributing geospatial data from various geoscience databases and platforms.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Support multidisciplinary teams by ensuring smooth integration of geoscience data into technical workflows, regional studies, models, and decision-making activities.

  • Organize, load, and manage geological data within Petrel and similar platforms, ensuring the accurate integration of surface and subsurface data into projects.

  • Compile and manage data, including well headers, wireline logs, geophysical surveys, GIS datasets, etc., to support project work.

  • Provide leadership and oversight for IHS Kingdom geotechnical data holdings, ensuring effective data integration and alignment with organizational objectives.

  • Ensure data is stored and maintained according to best practices, verifying the integrity and reliability of datasets.

  • Generate maps, cross-sections, and other products to support operational activities.

  • Mentor and train team members on data standards, software tools, and best practices.

  • Periodic support at the Mineral Core Research Facility (MCRF) in Edmonton and the Core Research Centre (CRC) in Calgary.


Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Diploma in geoscience or related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in the petroleum industry.

  • Extensive experience in managing geoscience datasets and geospatial databases with expertise in data quality assurance.

  • Proficiency in Schlumberger Petrel, Studio, Accumap, and Kingdom database management.

  • Familiarity with Geolog, Techlog, ESRI ArcGIS, and experience with programming languages like Python, R, MATLAB, and SQL.

  • ASET certification is an asset.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and multitasking skills.

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.


Additional Information:

  • Location: Edmonton Regional or Calgary Head Office, Alberta.

  • Travel: Up to 1-5 days per quarter, overnight.

  • License: Valid class 5 driver’s license with a positive driving record.

  • Training: First Aid, H2S Alive, and driver training will be provided as needed.
