Description:
The Salvation Army, a respected organization with more than 130 years of service in Canada, is seeking a Cleaner to join the Halifax Centre of Hope team. As one of the country’s largest and most trusted faith-based organizations, The Salvation Army helps millions of people each year by providing essentials such as food, shelter, and clothing, as well as offering programs that support individuals facing unemployment, addiction, and family challenges.
The Cleaner will play an important role in maintaining a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for residents, staff, and visitors. This role is essential in supporting the mission of The Salvation Army by ensuring facilities are well-maintained, hygienic, and welcoming.
Key Responsibilities:
Clean and sanitize washrooms, fixtures, dormitories, utility rooms, and hallways on the fourth and fifth floors.
Maintain floors through sweeping, mopping, dry mopping, and polishing with a buffer.
Collect, launder, and distribute linens and towels; strip and make beds as needed.
Maintain linen rooms in an organized manner.
Perform general cleaning tasks on the main floors, stairways, chapel, and elevator.
Ensure proper use and storage of cleaning supplies, while monitoring inventory.
Assist the maintenance worker when required.
Handle clothing and personal items appropriately and report to caregivers if necessary.
Working Conditions:
This role is performed within residential and community settings and may involve exposure to challenging environments, including unpleasant odors, verbal abuse, and situations involving drugs or alcohol. Physical demands include lifting over 20 pounds and managing repetitive cleaning tasks.
Qualifications:
High school graduation preferred.
Certificate in Cleaning/Janitorial Services preferred.
Crisis Intervention training an asset.
First Aid Certification required.
Knowledge of WHMIS regulations.
Ability to work independently and maintain professionalism in challenging situations.
Conditions of Employment:
Casual part-time role with variable shifts (7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m., or 11:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.).
Flexibility required for weekends and evenings.
Each shift includes two paid 15-minute breaks and one unpaid 30-minute lunch break.
Work location: Halifax Centre of Hope, 2044 Gottingen Street, Halifax, NS.
Compensation:
The target hourly rate is CA$15.70 – CA$16.90, with a maximum of CA$20.28, based on experience, skills, and internal equity.
