Description:

Unlock Democracy Canada (UDC) is a non-profit, non-partisan charitable organization dedicated to renewing and strengthening democracy across Canada. Through innovative campaigns and community-led initiatives, UDC works to combat voter apathy, encourage meaningful participation, improve civic education, and drive political and legislative reform. Current projects include Local Choice, Community Votes, #Vote16, and Better Ballots 101, with additional campaigns being developed to further increase civic engagement nationwide.

As a Board Member, you will play a critical role in shaping UDC’s vision, guiding its strategic direction, and supporting the organization in its mission to inspire democratic renewal. Board Members act as ambassadors for UDC, offering expertise, guidance, and governance oversight while ensuring the organization remains accountable to its mission and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate actively in Board meetings (approximately 3–4 hours per month)

  • Contribute to strategic planning, campaign development, and governance oversight

  • Provide expertise in your area of experience (e.g., advocacy, fundraising, IT, governance, communications, EDI, etc.)

  • Act as a champion of UDC’s mission and represent the organization’s values in the community

  • Support fundraising and partnership-building efforts, where relevant

  • Collaborate with fellow Board members and the Executive Director to ensure UDC’s long-term sustainability and impact

Candidate Profile:

  • Passionate about democratic renewal, civic engagement, and political reform

  • Committed to principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team-based environment

  • Open-minded, creative, and willing to contribute time and expertise to advancing UDC’s goals

  • Candidates from equity-deserving communities, with diverse lived experiences and perspectives, are strongly encouraged to apply

Time Commitment:

  • Approximately 3–4 hours per month, including action-oriented Board meetings and related tasks
