Associate Producers

Description:

CBC News Syndicated Audio is looking for two experienced and dynamic Associate Producers who thrive in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment and who are focused on finding guests who are at their core incredible storytellers, and sound-rich audio that engages the ear.

In this role, you’ll be supporting 60 local audio programming teams across the country, involved in shaping and producing audio content that audiences want to know more about. You’ll be finding guests who can provide context, analysis or opinion on breaking national and international news and current events, writing scripts and question-lines, and editing tape for audio platforms.

You’ll operate independently under the direction of an Executive Producer, to research, gather, package and present stories that are broadcast on local radio programs across the country. Your work will include pre-interviews of potential guests, writing scripts and question lines, editing audio and collating background material on stories. You ensure all of the content adheres to CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices (JSP).

Driven by curiosity and an open mindset, you thrive in a 24/7 breaking news environment, making decisions under pressure. Most days, you’ll be performing a variety of roles on your own.

While you’re a self-starter, you’re joining a team where collaboration and communication is essential, both with your immediate team and the local programs you support.

You care about the people you work with and have a deep appreciation for different perspectives, opinions and experiences. You live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.

We are looking to fill two permanent full-time positions, based anywhere in Canada with access to a CBC station. You will be expected to be on-site most days, however there is some flexibility to work from home. These roles can be based in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, or Halifax.

Core responsibilities:

  • Pitch, research and develop original story ideas for live and breaking news, showcasing a diversity of backgrounds and life experiences
  • Find relevant people to interview, arrange and book interviews, create scripts and supporting audio elements
  • Record and edit audio/visual content that has excellent sound and visual quality
  • Upload content to appropriate folders, adhering to appropriate naming conventions and tagging principles
  • Distill large amounts of complex information under tight deadlines while adhering to the JSP
  • Stay informed on current affairs, especially stories of national and international importance that the audience is interested in knowing more about.
  • Respond quickly to breaking news
  • Collaborate with colleagues across CBC to share content with audiences across Canada and coordinate coverage
  • Arrange and book studios and other field resources as required.
  • Manage multiple and often competing priorities.

What you bring to the role:

  • As proven in your attached demo reel; portfolio or website
    • Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, current affairs stories
    • Track record of connecting with guests from equity deserving groups
    • Demonstrated professional experience using various news platforms and audio tools.
  • Ability to work in high-pressure environments with considerable deadline contraints and under public scrutiny
  • Ability to work independently, with superior problem-solving skills and objectivity
  • Ability to forge positive team relationships where you value collaboration, transparency, respect and inclusiveness
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer skills and technical proficiency
  • A broad range of issues and knowledge on a variety of topics from politics to pop culture
  • Familiarity with CBC’s audio programming offers, including local radio current affairs morning and afternoon shows.
  • A knowledge of CBC’s JSP and its practical implementation
  • An understanding of the process for communicating with paid guests and initiating payment
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends, stat holidays and overtime
  • Three years of previous related experience in a multiplatform newsroom
  • A university degree or college diploma in journalism or related fields is preferred
