Animal Health Technician

Description:

The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), one of Canada’s leading biomedical research institutions affiliated with McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine, is currently seeking a Temporary Part-time Occasional Animal Health Technician. This is an on-call role providing essential support in the care and welfare of laboratory animals used for research. The ideal candidate will have formal education in Animal Health Technology and will assist in the clinical, technical, and administrative activities under the guidance of the Animal Resources Division.

Key Responsibilities:

• Observe, assess, and document animal health conditions and administer treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.

• Report any health issues to veterinary staff and research investigators.

• Support pre- and post-operative care and prepare instruments and supplies for surgical procedures.

• Perform diagnostic tests and conduct both routine and specialized techniques on laboratory animals.

• Educate and orient principal investigators (PIs) and research staff on animal care protocols.

• Maintain detailed administrative records, coordinate meetings, and support training activities.

• Perform husbandry tasks, including daily animal care and facility maintenance.

• Help manage inventory of medical and technical supplies.

• Operate and monitor various equipment and instruments necessary for laboratory operations.

Required Qualifications:

• D.E.C. in Animal Health Technology (Program 145.A0 – 2,730 hours) from a school recognized by the Ordre des médecins vétérinaires du Québec.

• Bilingual proficiency in English and French (spoken and written).

• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

• Adaptability and ability to work independently under minimal supervision.

• Comfort using various software platforms including Windows, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet applications.

• CALAS-AALAS Certification or equivalent is considered an asset.

Additional Details:

• Status: Temporary, Part-time Occasional (on-call; schedule varies depending on division needs).

• Work Shift: Typically starts at 8 a.m. (may include weekends, holidays, and vacation coverage).

• Pay Rate: $23.80 to $44.19 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
