Description:
CN is currently hiring a Soudeur ou soudeuse en voie (Track Welder) to join its maintenance team in Fort St. John, BC. This role is ideal for those who thrive in outdoor, physically demanding environments and value safety and teamwork. This position operates on a schedule of 8 working days followed by 6 days off, with responsibilities across various worksites. Team members are exposed to varying weather conditions and should expect to work away from their home location as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform carbon and manganese steel welding using stick electrodes and flux-cored arc welding.
Use high-frequency power tools and grinding equipment for welding and track maintenance.
Inspect welded track components and authorize return to service.
Maintain train operations within track safety standards.
Replace defective track components including ties, spikes, anchors, and crossing materials.
Correct track alignment, surface defects, and gauge irregularities.
Handle and distribute ballast and other track materials.
Operate and maintain track-related equipment and manage debris, vegetation, snow, and drainage around the right-of-way.
Ensure workplace safety by adhering to railway operating rules and producing reports on work performed and material usage.
Working Conditions:
Shift work, including long hours, weekends, overtime, and travel away from home.
Physically demanding environment requiring frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs (22 kg) and occasionally up to 70 lbs (32 kg).
Exposure to outdoor conditions including dust, pollen, vibration, and noise.
Use of respirators may be required for specific tasks.
Regular use of both manual and powered tools.
Qualifications:
Welding certification (federal/provincial) or demonstrated equivalent experience
Valid Class 3 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent)
Strong teamwork and communication skills
Experience in rail work, signaling, mechanical trades, or related fields is an asset
Postsecondary education in a trade is considered a bonus
Training:
The selected candidate will undergo 4 weeks of classroom training (40 hours/week) followed by hands-on field training. Training includes health and safety procedures and basic equipment operations. Successful completion of both training phases is mandatory for continued employment.
