Web Application Developer

Description:

The Manitoba Centre for Health Policy is looking to engage an experienced web developer to migrate, update and recreate a couple of existing documentation systems.

MCHP is a research unit within the Department of Community Health Sciences, in the Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba, focusing on the question "What makes people healthy?" We carry out population-based research on health services, population and public health, and the social determinants of health. Our research is funded by peer reviewed grants through national and local funding agencies, and government contracts. We use de-identified data housed in the Manitoba Population Research Data Repository (Repository) at MCHP. MCHP is a team of more than 60 University researchers and graduate students, data managers, analysts, research coordinators and research support staff. MCHP employs a number of programmer/analysts to perform statistical analysis of the data held in the Repository primarily using SAS and R. MCHP has a unique resource of health and social data.

The Repository includes over 80 databases that are de-identified but linkable at the individual (person) level. MCHP has developed extensive documentation on holdings of 90+ database systems for use in research. We have an existing browser-based Metadata Repository system which requires some functionality modifications, the addition of data associated reporting capabilities, and expansion of the system accessibility through the web. An older web available Concept Dictionary system needs to be fully redeveloped, transferring the existing data contents into this new system, and implementing enhancements in functionality. These two systems provide an extensive wealth of documentation that explores the data housed in the MCHP Data Repository for both researchers and our staff.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

  • Undergrad degree in computer science or College Diploma in Database Management and Webdesign, with 3 years directly related experience.
  • Background in data management system, relation database development and documentation.
  • Required experience with dynamic web-based user interface development using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, SQLite/MySQL, and web server platforms. Experience with other frameworks would be beneficial (eg. Django, Astro, Tailwind)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Access and Excel.
  • Knowledge of SAS is an asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence and initiative.
