Metro Vancouver’s Liquid Waste Services Department is inviting applications for a Utility Systems Foreman to supervise the operations and maintenance of the region's extensive wastewater collection systems. This full-time, regular position is based at the South Fraser Works Yard in Surrey, BC. The role offers a competitive hourly wage of $47.58, plus an additional 6.25% deferred compensation, which may be received as pay or time off.

The Utility Systems Foreman will lead a team of skilled workers in ensuring the efficient and safe operation of wastewater collection infrastructure. This includes pumps, valves, sewer lines, control systems, and watercourse management. The successful candidate will demonstrate a high level of technical expertise, leadership ability, and a commitment to health and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily operations and maintenance of Metro Vancouver’s wastewater collection facilities and support systems.

  • Ensure operational readiness of equipment, including pumps, valves, control systems, and watercourses, in compliance with policies and procedures.

  • Investigate operational issues and initiate appropriate corrective actions.

  • Plan, assign, and supervise preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities.

  • Develop work schedules and project cost estimates while managing allocated budgets.

  • Evaluate system performance, perform fault analyses, and assess critical equipment.

  • Maintain operational records using Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems; submit detailed reports as needed.

  • Collaborate with internal departments, municipal partners, contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies.

  • Participate in the development and review of procedures, maintenance plans, and upgrade projects.

  • Provide on-the-job training and mentorship to team members; ensure ongoing development of staff in safety and technical skills.

  • Promote a safety-first culture and ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations and Metro Vancouver safety policies.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent education, supplemented by courses in supervision, civil/mechanical technology, computers, electrical, instrumentation, etc.

  • Valid BC EOCP Level III certification in Wastewater Collections (Level IV preferred) and maintained in good standing.

  • At least six (6) years of hands-on experience in wastewater system operations, maintenance, and support systems.

  • Proven experience supervising a team, especially in a unionized work environment.

  • Strong technical knowledge of wastewater systems, including mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, sewer cleaning, corrosion control, and process control systems.

  • Skilled in interpreting engineering drawings and technical documents.

  • Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, with the ability to liaise across all levels of stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety procedures, and WorkSafeBC regulations.

  • Competent in relevant computer applications and able to maintain detailed records and documentation.

  • Physically capable of performing job duties and willing to work shift work, on-call, or stand-by, as required.

  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
