Description:

CN (Canadian National Railway) is hiring a Soudeur ou soudeuse en voie (Track Welder) for its operations in Mackenzie, BC. This hands-on, full-time position is ideal for candidates who enjoy outdoor physical work, are safety-oriented, and are seeking a challenging and meaningful role in the railway sector.

The Track Welder is responsible for welding and repairing track components, performing maintenance tasks, and ensuring the integrity and safety of CN’s rail infrastructure. This position involves working in a dynamic environment, often at different locations and in varying weather conditions. The work schedule typically follows an 8-days-on / 6-days-off rotation.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform welding tasks using stick electrodes and flux-cored wire welding

  • Grind and weld track components made from carbon and manganese steel

  • Operate high-frequency power tools and perform precision welding tasks

  • Inspect rail infrastructure and authorize tracks for service readiness

  • Maintain safe operating conditions in accordance with CN’s track standards

  • Replace or install rail components such as ties, spikes, and anchors

  • Correct track defects including alignment, leveling, and spacing

  • Assist with construction and repair of crossings and track sections

  • Unload and distribute ballast and other track materials

  • Clear vegetation, snow, and debris from rail property

  • Maintain drainage and site cleanliness post-maintenance work

  • Ensure strict compliance with CN's operating rules and safety procedures

  • Document work activities, inventory usage, and inspection reports


Working Conditions:

  • Outdoor work in variable weather, noise, dust, and vibration

  • Physically demanding: lifting up to 50 lbs (22 kg) frequently, and 70 lbs (32 kg) occasionally

  • Use of hand and power tools, respiratory protection equipment where needed

  • Travel and work outside the home terminal as required

  • Extended hours and shift work including overtime

  • Unionized role governed by collective bargaining agreement


Requirements:

  • Federal or provincial welding certification or equivalent experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Valid Class 3 driver’s license in Québec or provincial equivalent

  • Strong hand-eye coordination and ability to handle physical work

  • Experience or training in railway operations, mechanics, or skilled trades considered assets

  • Active listening, teamwork, and communication skills are essential


Training:

The selected candidate will undergo mandatory classroom and on-the-job training over a 4-week period (40 hours per week). The training includes safety protocols and basic machinery operation. Successful completion is required for continued employment.
