Track Maintenance Technician

 

Description:

CN is seeking a Track Maintainer/Truck Driver who is enthusiastic about physical outdoor work, team collaboration, and safety-first operations to join its rail maintenance crew. In this unionized role, you will maintain and ensure the integrity of CN’s rail infrastructure by inspecting, repairing, and replacing track components across the country.

As part of a mobile crew, your work location will change regularly, offering an engaging and physically active environment. You will play a key role in CN’s mission to maintain a safe, reliable rail network across North America.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and maintain railway track structures and right-of-way according to CN standards

  • Supervise and train track forces for safe and high-quality maintenance work

  • Repair and replace defective ties, rails, spikes, and anchors

  • Correct deviations in track alignment, gauge, and surface

  • Install/repair street and rail crossings, power-operated switches, and insulated joints

  • Load/unload and sort track materials and ballast

  • Clear vegetation, debris, snow, and maintain proper drainage

  • Prepare inventory, inspections, and maintenance reports

  • Ensure compliance with all safety standards and operational rules


Working Conditions:

  • Must be available for shift work, overtime, and travel (away from home on various cycles)

  • Ability to work in all weather conditions

  • Physically demanding – repetitive tasks and lifting up to 70 pounds

  • Good eye-hand coordination required


Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

  • Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills

  • A safety-focused mindset and willingness to lead by example

  • Welding skills, signal knowledge, or Rail Operating Rules knowledge considered assets


Training Provided:

  • 4 weeks of paid classroom training (40 hours/week)

  • Hands-on on-the-job training following safety and operational standards

  • Successful completion of training is mandatory for continued employment
