Description:

The Law Society of Ontario (LSO) is seeking a Team Manager, Investigation Services to lead a multi-disciplinary team in conducting investigations related to professional conduct, competence, and capacity of Licensees. This role involves managing high-profile cases involving mortgage fraud, syndicated mortgages, real estate-related financial issues, and trust fund mismanagement.

This position requires a strategic leader with expertise in forensic auditing, legal investigations, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate will provide oversight on complex cases, ensuring evidence-based, timely investigations aligned with the Society’s standards.

Key Responsibilities:

🔍 Investigation & Case Management:

  • Oversee investigations related to mortgage fraud, real estate finance, trust funds, and financial mismanagement

  • Manage investigation processes, caseload assignments, and risk assessments

  • Ensure sound evidence collection and compliance with prosecutorial standards

  • Provide guidance on high-profile and complex investigations

  • Conduct quality assurance and risk management in investigations

👥 Leadership & Team Management:

  • Supervise Forensic Auditors, Investigation Counsel, and Investigators

  • Provide mentorship, performance evaluation, and staff development

  • Oversee hiring, training, and performance management of the investigation team

  • Foster a collaborative and high-performing team environment

📈 Regulatory & Policy Compliance:

  • Develop and implement investigation policies and procedures

  • Monitor legal trends in regulatory enforcement and adapt strategies accordingly

  • Collaborate with senior management on policy development and operational improvements

  • Represent LSO in external meetings and regulatory discussions

Legal & Financial Expertise:

  • Strong understanding of civil and criminal law procedures, rules of evidence, and prosecutorial standards

  • Knowledge of real estate, estates law, financial crimes, and forensic auditing

  • Ensure investigations align with regulatory standards and legal best practices

Qualifications & Skills:

Education: LLB/JD and membership in good standing with the Law Society OR a professional accounting designation
Experience:

  • 10+ years in investigations within a regulatory/legal environment

  • 5+ years in a leadership role
    Technical Skills:

  • Expertise in investigative processes, forensic auditing, and regulatory compliance

  • Strong knowledge of legal procedures and financial fraud investigations

  • Proficiency in data analysis, case management, and legal research tools
    Preferred Qualification: Real estate law, estates law, criminal law, or private practice experience
