Systems Designer

 

Description:

An Intermediate Systems Designer [Engineer] is responsible for managing technical aspects of a project and overseeing engineering requirements specific to the project. You are responsible for working with the customer, ATS project manager, and ATS project team for the creation and validation of system requirements. You will be required to deep dive into customer processes and become the local system process subject matter expert. All these responsibilities will ultimately drive improvements in quality, cost, and delivery.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

  • Project Technical Leadership
  • Provide technical oversight, problem solving and coordination of project engineering work.
  • Provide project support during system startup, integration and buy-off.
  • Assist in the systems design and development of system concepts and labor hours in quotation preparation.
  • Actively participate in design reviews
  • Assist in systems’ design, development, execution planning and monitoring.
  • Manage project technical risk; ensuring to highlight high risk areas and create mitigation plans to reduce risk.
  • Model and conduct experiments on high-risk system elements to validate design assumptions.
  • Manage and monitor ‘process critical’ third party equipment vendors to ensure compliance with requirements and adherence to budget and schedule.
  • Conduct acceptance tests and approving ‘process critical’ third party equipment.
  • Subject Matter Expertise
  • Responsible for learning customer processes; becoming the local expert in their process, to support the design and eventually the integration of the as-built machine.
  • Develop, design and/or manage POP (proof of principle) studies to prove high risk elements and design ideas.
  • Prepare systems-level design calculations including but not limited to:
  • Systems Accuracy
  • Metrology / Instrumentation
  • Kinematics
  • Reliability / Maintainability
  • Process Capability
  • Gauge Capability
  • Cycle-time
  • Machine Overall Equipment Effectiveness
  • Perform hands-on testing.
  • Requirements Definition and Verification
  • Prepare, compile and document design requirements (ex. Functional Requirements Specifications)
  • Evaluate and document design outputs for conformance to design requirements (ex. Acceptance Test Plans)
  • Evaluate and document overall machine system performance (MOEE, Cycle time, Availability, Yield)
  • Evaluate and prepare Failure Modes and Effects analyses (pFMEAs, mFMEAs, dFMEAs) as required.
  • Evaluate and prepare machinery Safety Risk Assessments
  • Learn, understand and flow down customer and industry requirements to ensure overall machine compliance.
  • Create technical specifications to purchase and validates specialized third-party equipment (ex. Vendor Technical Specifications)

Additional Information QUALIFICATIONS: Education: A post-secondary degree in Systems Design, Engineering Physics, Engineering Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering or equivalent.

Note: A P. Eng license is required to be titled “Engineer” in Ontario.

Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical, electrical, controls or systems engineering support, preferably in an automation environment and with customer interaction.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of robotics, machine controls and manufacturing processes and be able to keep abreast of leading-edge technology.
  • Experienced in Microsoft office suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Project)
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills are required.
  • Ability to lead or work as part of a multi-disciplinary project team are essential.
