Student Support Specialist

 

Description:

The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for the position of Student Support Specialist within the Student Affairs and Services division. Reporting to the Team Lead, Comprehensive Student Support Team, and the Assistant Dean, Student Wellness, Support & Success, this role is centered on providing proactive and responsive support to students dealing with challenging behaviour often tied to personal, health, or academic issues.

The Student Support Specialist will collaborate with Case Managers and campus partners to resolve behavioural concerns through guidance, referral, and informal resolution strategies. The role emphasizes conflict resolution, behavioural intervention, and education, contributing to a safe, supportive, and equitable campus community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance to students dealing with complex behavioural and interpersonal issues

  • Implement strategies and best practices for addressing chronic behavioural concerns

  • Build strong working relationships with academic and administrative stakeholders

  • Respond to student-related conflicts and coordinate resolutions

  • Promote awareness of student support services to campus partners

  • Facilitate workshops on student distress and behaviour management

  • Apply University policies consistently and fairly in all student matters

  • Refer and support individuals in distress while connecting them to appropriate services

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, counselling psychology, higher education, public health, or related field (Master’s preferred)

  • 6–7 years of relevant experience in behavioural support, mental health, or accessibility services

  • Experience mediating conflicts and delivering workshops to students and/or staff

  • Familiarity with restorative justice practices and voluntary educational measures

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to navigate complex student cases and de-escalate challenging situations

  • Knowledge of informal resolution pathways and student conduct frameworks

Assets (Nonessential but Preferred):

  • Mental health and suicide intervention training or certification

  • Understanding of the Code of Student Conduct and related university policies

  • Report writing and investigation experience

  • Background in faculty training or senior-level outreach
