Staff Search Engineer

Description:

ClickUp is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer, Search to enhance and scale the search infrastructure for its all-in-one productivity platform. This role focuses on designing and optimizing search capabilities using OpenSearch/ElasticSearch to deliver fast, accurate, and intelligent search experiences that support AI-driven features. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in search technologies, distributed systems, and performance optimization.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and implement scalable search solutions to meet the needs of a rapidly growing user base.

• Improve search relevance, indexing pipelines, and real-time data accuracy.

• Develop measurement frameworks to evaluate and enhance search quality.

• Build and refine vector search capabilities for next-generation experiences.

• Collaborate with AI, backend, and product teams to integrate search into new features.

• Troubleshoot large-scale search-related issues and mentor junior engineers.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.

• 7+ years of experience in search engineering or a closely related field.

• Strong expertise with OpenSearch/ElasticSearch.

• Experience with high-volume, distributed data processing systems.

• Proven ability to optimize query parsing, indexing, and search relevance.

• Excellent communication and cross-team collaboration skills.

Preferred:

• Experience with vector embeddings, semantic search, and NLP.

• Backend development experience with TypeScript.

• Prior work on high-performance search systems under heavy load.
