Sponsor Coverage Associate

 

Description:

SMBC Group, one of the world’s largest financial institutions, is seeking a talented and analytical Associate, Sponsor Coverage to join its Toronto-based team. This role is pivotal in supporting transaction origination and execution activities in infrastructure, power, real estate, and private equity sectors, catering to global financial sponsors.

As part of SMBC’s dynamic sponsor coverage team, you will contribute across the full deal lifecycle— from client interaction and marketing to credit analysis, portfolio monitoring, and transaction execution—working cross-functionally with product specialists, internal legal teams, and global affiliates.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Support origination, structuring, and execution of transactions related to infrastructure, power, private equity, and real estate sponsors.

  • Build and maintain financial models for sensitivity analysis and cash flow projections.

  • Prepare internal memos, credit applications, profitability assessments, and pitch materials.

  • Conduct due diligence and assist in evaluating deal structures and associated risks.

  • Coordinate internal approvals and workflow processes to ensure timely deal closure.

  • Conduct in-depth industry and market research, monitor ESG metrics, and stay updated on macroeconomic trends.

  • Assist with ongoing portfolio management, including waiver processing, amendments, credit reviews, and regulatory compliance checks.

  • Collaborate with internal departments, external legal counsel, clients, and advisors to ensure proper deal documentation and KYC compliance.

  • Support Directors in account planning and special projects; provide backup support as needed.

  • Represent SMBC in client meetings, industry events, and networking forums.


Qualifications and Skills:

  • Education: University degree in Business, Economics, or a related field.

  • Experience: 1–3 years in corporate banking, credit analysis, or sponsor coverage is preferred.

  • Financial Skills:

    • Strong accounting knowledge and ability to interpret financial statements.

    • Proficiency in MS Excel (modeling), Word, and PowerPoint.

    • Experience in credit application drafting and financial due diligence.

  • Soft Skills:

    • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

    • Strong attention to detail, time management, and the ability to work under pressure.

    • Self-motivated, collaborative, and curious with a high level of integrity.

  • Cultural Awareness: Understanding of ESG concepts, Japanese business culture, and global bank operations is a plus.

  • Compliance: Familiarity with Anti-Money Laundering (AML) protocols and regulatory requirements.


Interpersonal Interaction:

  • Internal: Collaborate with Toronto-based teams, global SMBC affiliates, and various internal departments.

  • External: Build relationships with clients, legal and accounting advisors, syndication partners, and consultants.


Working Conditions:

  • Environment: Hybrid (Open office + Remote work model)

  • Commitment: Must be available occasionally during evenings or weekends to support time-sensitive operations.
