Description:
Planet, a pioneering space and data company that operates the largest constellation of Earth-imaging satellites in history, is hiring a Software Engineer for their Automated Mosaics team. This remote role (open to candidates in British Columbia, Alberta, or Ontario) involves building and optimizing scalable systems that produce Planet’s Mosaic products—globally consistent, high-quality views of Earth used in environmental, commercial, and government applications.
As part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will contribute to the improvement of image processing algorithms, ensure global-scale data reliability, and maintain production systems that select and deliver mosaic data to customers. The work directly supports applications such as deforestation monitoring, ecosystem protection, and global renewable energy surveillance.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop, maintain, and enhance image processing algorithms that generate Planet’s Mosaic (Basemap) products.
Ensure reliability and performance of large-scale data production pipelines.
Oversee systems for data selection and delivery in alignment with customer requests.
Collaborate with upstream teams (satellite image acquisition, QC) and downstream users (customer delivery, internal Planet products).
Contribute to the improvement of Mosaic infrastructure and internal tooling used across teams.
Candidate Requirements:
Education & Experience:
Minimum 4 years of experience in a related field of software development.
Proven experience in scientific Python programming.
Experience running large-scale production workloads and building scalable systems.
Familiarity with geospatial algorithms or image processing methods.
Technical & Collaborative Skills:
Strong command of collaborative tools like GitHub/GitLab.
Excellent written communication for asynchronous remote collaboration.
Quick learner, adaptable to new tools and technologies.
Preferred Qualifications (Bonus):
Prior work with satellite imagery or geospatial datasets.
Project management experience.
Familiarity with observability tools such as logging, alerting, and monitoring systems.
