Description:
The Salvation Army, a global Christian organization serving communities for over 130 years, is seeking compassionate and dedicated Shelter Workers for its Nanaimo New Hope Centre. This position is central to supporting individuals experiencing homelessness by providing safe, welcoming, and respectful care while upholding the organization’s values of dignity, service, hope, and stewardship.
The Shelter Worker will be responsible for greeting and monitoring clients, ensuring safety and security, enforcing shelter rules, maintaining accurate records, and assisting clients with their immediate needs. Duties include distributing bedding and hygiene items, conducting safety checks, managing client medication according to policy, liaising with external agencies such as police or first responders, and mediating disputes to maintain a peaceful environment. Workers will also support programming initiatives, encourage positive client engagement, and collaborate with kitchen staff, volunteers, and case managers to provide holistic care.
This role involves shift work in a fast-paced and sometimes high-stress environment. Shelter Workers must handle situations with empathy, professionalism, and sound judgment, while maintaining confidentiality and respecting the dignity of all clients. Responsibilities also include attending staff meetings, participating in mandatory training (such as ARMATUS abuse prevention), and ensuring that shelter facilities and public areas meet organizational standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Monitor and record client activities, prepare reports, and maintain logbooks.
Conduct safety inspections of the property and enforce shelter rules.
Respond to conflicts or crises, de-escalate tense situations, and ensure security.
Manage supplies and track client-related data, including financial and occupancy information.
Support or deliver approved programs and resources for clients.
Collaborate with internal teams, external agencies, and volunteers for seamless client care.
Requirements:
High School diploma (post-secondary in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, or Addictions preferred).
Minimum 6 months frontline experience in social services, mental health, or addictions.
Knowledge of homelessness, poverty, and addiction issues and available community resources in Nanaimo.
Strong communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
Ability to uphold boundaries, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate resilience in demanding environments.
Computer proficiency (especially Microsoft Excel).
Clear TB skin test and criminal record clearance required.
Occupational First Aid Level 1, WHMIS, and valid driver’s license are assets.
Working Conditions:
On-site at the Nanaimo New Hope Centre.
May involve exposure to sharp objects, bodily fluids, chemicals, or verbal aggression.
May require lifting up to 15 lbs, standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods.
Compensation & Benefits:
Target hiring range: 2539 – 2564 CAD/month (maximum 2589 CAD/month).
Placement within range depends on experience, qualifications, and market conditions.
