Shelter Worker

 

Description:

The Salvation Army in Canada, with over 130 years of dedicated service, is seeking a compassionate and committed Shelter Worker for its Nanaimo New Hope Centre. This role is integral to the organization's mission of supporting individuals facing homelessness by providing shelter, care, and assistance while promoting independence, safety, and overall well-being.

The Shelter Worker serves as the primary point of contact at the front desk, managing the flow of staff, clients, visitors, and volunteers, and ensuring that all interactions reflect the organization’s values of hope, dignity, and service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Welcome and register clients, ensuring a safe, respectful, and supportive atmosphere.

  • Monitor and maintain security by overseeing access to the facility, performing security checks, and enforcing shelter rules with empathy.

  • Record and report daily activities, incidents, and client interactions accurately using logbooks and data entry systems.

  • Conduct inspections of rooms and premises, distribute bedding, blankets, and hygiene supplies as per policy.

  • Respond to conflicts, mediate disputes, and implement emergency protocols, including evacuations and fire drills, when needed.

  • Collaborate with other shelter workers, program staff, and external agencies to ensure holistic client care.

  • Manage and track supplies, clients’ personal items, and financial records related to the shelter program.

  • Support clients in accessing community resources, engaging in positive activities, and participating in available programming.

  • Attend training sessions and staff meetings as required.

  • Uphold confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism in all interactions.

Working Hours:

  • Shift: Saturday and Sunday, 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Working Conditions:

  • Physical activity includes sitting, standing, and walking.

  • May require lifting or moving up to 15 pounds.

  • Exposure to challenging situations, including dealing with angry or aggressive individuals, verbal abuse, sharp objects, chemicals, or infectious diseases.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, or related fields preferred.

  • Minimum six months of relevant experience in mental health, addictions, or frontline social services.

  • Knowledge of homelessness, poverty, and addictions, and familiarity with community resources in Nanaimo.

  • Criminal record clearance and TB skin test required.

  • Valid Occupational First Aid Level 1, WHMIS certification, or Class 5 driver’s license are assets.

  • Strong communication, time management, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ability to work in high-stress, fast-paced environments.
