Senior Underwriter

Description:

Empire Vie, a leading Canadian insurance and financial services company, is seeking a Tarificateur(trice) principal(e) (Senior Underwriter) to join its remote team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the company’s profitability by accurately assessing and managing financial and mortality risks associated with individual life and critical illness insurance proposals.

Key Responsibilities:

• Evaluate and approve individual life insurance policies up to CAD 2,000,000–3,000,000 and critical illness policies up to CAD 1,000,000.

• Supervise and mentor junior and intermediate underwriters to ensure timely and accurate underwriting decisions.

• Analyze medical and financial information to assess mortality and financial risks.

• Collaborate with sales and marketing teams to provide informed guidance on risk decisions.

• Maintain relationships with reinsurance providers to manage cases exceeding Empire Vie’s retention limits.

• Consult with senior underwriters, medical directors, or the risk management manager for complex cases.

• Lead and actively participate in special projects and team initiatives.

• Deliver training sessions and share specialized knowledge with less experienced underwriters.

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum 4 years of experience in individual risk assessment, including at least 3 years at an intermediate level.

• Proven experience in mentoring or coaching other professionals.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with sound decision-making and judgment abilities.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), internet tools, and databases.

• Advanced understanding of medical and financial terminology related to insurance underwriting.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (bilingualism is an asset).

• Highly organized with the ability to apply consistent decision-making methodologies.

• Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Nursing, or Kinesiology.

• FLMI (Fellow, Life Management Institute) designation with a specialization in risk assessment.

• Actively pursuing or holding the FALU (Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting) designation.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced knowledge in financial risk assessment and life and health insurance underwriting will be considered a strong asset.
