We are currently seeking an experienced, driven, and dedicated Group Leader to join our Buildings group based in our Barrie office. This is an exciting new opportunity for a motivated structural engineering professional to take on a leadership role. The Group Leader will focus on team leadership and business development, leading a team of structural engineers, project managers, and technical support staff and will be involved with a variety of projects such as new building designs, renovations and additions, structural assessments, structural repairs, building envelope repairs, and municipal structures. Projects may involve commercial, institutional, industrial, residential, or municipal buildings and wood, timber, steel, concrete, and masonry materials. The Group Leader will report to the Buildings Department Manager. The position will involve working in our Barrie office for a minimum of 4 days per week.

The successful candidate will be a progressive, collaborative, and energetic professional engineer with a strong background in structural engineering primarily working in a consulting engineering environment. Key Responsibilities
 

  • Develop and execute quarterly business plans; set group goals and targets; regularly communicate progress with the Department Manager.
  • Manage, mentor, train, and inspire group members; conduct performance reviews; support career development and team growth initiatives.
  • Oversee structural engineering projects from inception to completion, ensuring quality, timelines, and budgets are met.
  • Monitor staff utilization, project budgets, schedules, and profitability; assign and coordinate workloads within the group.
  • Communicate with other Group Leaders and internal teams to share resources, support business development, and align on technical standards and practices.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships to generate repeat and new business opportunities.
  • Identify new project opportunities, lead proposal development, and participate in marketing and promotional activities for the department and company.
  • Serve as a Senior Engineer on projects, providing technical oversight, quality control reviews, and design leadership.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy work environment in alignment with the OHSA and company safety policies.
  • Coordinate with human resources on staff issues, training, and adherence to company policies; lead group meetings and handle internal administrative tasks.
  • Undertake structural engineering projects, complete technical work, and be responsible for the successful execution of projects.
  • Conduct quality control reviews of structural engineering work and provide feedback to project managers and engineers.
     

Key Position Requirements
 

  • P.Eng. in the province of Ontario, registered with PEO
  • Minimum of 10 years of structural engineering experience, preferably in the consulting environment
  • Technical leader in structural engineering
  • Proficiency with the design, analysis, and assessment of municipal, institutional, commercial, industrial, and residential buildings
  • Experience working on engineering projects involving wood, timber, steel, concrete, and masonry materials
  • Experience working on a variety of large and small engineering project sizes
  • Strong working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code (Part 4 and Part 9)
  • Demonstrated abilities as a team leader, responsible for managing a team of support staff
  • Undertake business development with a desire to do more
  • Understanding of business metrics and company policies and can work with staff to achieve desired outcomes
  • Demonstrated high level of commitment
  • Strong, relevant design and project management experience
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent technical and analytical skills
  • Strong knowledge of appropriate design and analysis software
  • Full knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Understanding of relevant legislation, guidelines, and standards
  • Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation
