Senior Staff Software Engineer

Capital One Canada is hiring a Senior Staff Software Engineer for its Toronto office to lead the design and implementation of enterprise-grade software solutions. This high-impact, senior technical position does not include direct reports but plays a strategic role in shaping software and architecture decisions across the organization.

Capital One has been a major player in Canada’s financial technology sector for over 20 years, striving to redefine banking through innovative, user-focused credit solutions. The Capital One Software Studio, which has grown from a 10-person team to 270+, is focused on developing secure, scalable, and agile customer experiences powered by cloud technologies, RESTful APIs, microservices, and open-source tools.

As a Senior Staff Engineer, you will be responsible for designing architectural frameworks, managing solution lifecycle documentation, and collaborating with stakeholders to align technology with business strategy. You will drive high-level design initiatives, mentor technical teams, and influence governance decisions within architectural review boards.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and deliver scalable, secure architectural solutions that align with business goals

• Develop and maintain catalogs of business and technical capabilities

• Create and review Architectural Decision Records (ADRs) and High-Level Designs (HLDs)

• Participate in architectural governance and compliance processes

• Mentor engineering teams on architectural best practices

• Engage with internal stakeholders to promote innovation and technology alignment

Basic Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree

• At least 8 years of experience in software engineering or technology solution design

• Minimum 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Information Technology

• Certifications: TOGAF, AWS Solution Architect, or similar

• 10+ years of experience in software development

• 3+ years in solution architecture within large, regulated enterprises

• Experience influencing technical executives and mentoring engineers

• Proficiency in regulated environments (e.g., HIPAA, PCI, privacy compliance)

• Strong communication skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders
