Senior Mechanical Engineer

Description:

Mechatronic Design Solutions is seeking an Intermediate/Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the development of automated manufacturing lines in Ottawa, ON. The role covers the entire machine development cycle including proposal writing, project definition, machine design, fabrication, integration, and commissioning. Candidates should be highly organized, capable of working independently, and possess a broad skill set for developing automated industrial robotic manufacturing systems.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead mechanical design and development of automated manufacturing lines.

• Contribute to R&D projects including plant-based textiles, meat alternatives, robotic applications for artisan chocolatiers, high-speed checkweighers for precious metals, automated assembly, AI-based equipment monitoring, carbon fiber manufacturing, vertical farming, and automated food manufacturing.

• Handle project management for complex contracts.

• Coordinate with vendors, manage assembly and commissioning, and oversee start-up operations.

• Integrate diverse technologies including mechanisms, actuators, sensors, and structural components.

• Mentor junior team members and guide project teams.

• Maintain compliance with hygienic equipment design standards and machine guarding regulations (CSA Z432-16).

Qualifications:

• University degree in Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering (or equivalent).

• Strong problem-solving skills with a positive, can-do attitude.

• Excellent communication, organizational, leadership, and decision-making skills.

Desired Experience:

• Project management of $100k+ contracts.

• System-level understanding of industrial PLC control, actuators, and robotics.

• Experience in requirement definition, conceptual design, 3D modeling/drafting, vendor coordination, assembly, and commissioning.

• Client-facing experience and mentoring capabilities.

• Hands-on skills in assembly, machining, sheet metal fabrication, and prototyping.
