Senior Data Engineer

Description:

Yochana is actively seeking a highly experienced and technically strong Senior Data Engineer to join a dynamic team in the Greater Toronto Area on a hybrid, contract-based engagement. The successful candidate will act as a technical leader, providing guidance to data engineers and developers while working closely with Scrum Masters, Cloud Architects, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver scalable data solutions.

In this leadership-oriented role, you'll be expected to bring not only deep technical expertise in AWS data platforms but also strong team leadership, project governance, and program execution skills. The role is ideal for a self-motivated professional with a passion for building data-driven architectures that support real-time and batch data processing across cloud-native environments.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor a team of 10+ engineers and developers through project design, execution, and troubleshooting.

• Drive the architecture and implementation of large-scale data lake and data warehouse solutions on AWS.

• Participate in Sprint planning and squad operations to ensure strategic task prioritization and delivery.

• Oversee and ensure smooth ETL workflows, data pipeline orchestration, and system reliability.

• Coordinate project milestones, manage risks, and uphold compliance with enterprise standards.

• Maintain situational awareness to promptly identify and escalate issues when necessary.

• Track and report project metrics and sprint goals, ensuring all delivery targets are met.

• Work collaboratively to establish and maintain program governance structures and tools.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• 8–10 years of hands-on experience implementing data management solutions for both real-time and batch processing systems.

• Deep technical proficiency in:

  • AWS ecosystem: Redshift, Airflow, Lambda, SQS, SNS, Glue, Crawler, Data Catalog, CloudWatch, Step Functions.

  • Infrastructure as Code: Experience with Terraform and/or AWS CDK (1+ year minimum).

  • Programming: Strong skills in SQL, Python, and PySpark.

• Solid experience managing mid to large-sized engineering teams.

• Strong background in ETL design, data migration, data architecture, and cloud engineering principles.

• Ability to coordinate cross-functional resources, lead in agile environments, and ensure consistent execution.

• Excellent leadership, organizational, conflict-resolution, and analytical skills.

• Proficiency in program governance, establishing frameworks, monitoring interdependencies, and identifying risks.
