Scientific Officer

 

Description:

The Scientific Officer will play a central role in the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ISCR) at the McGill University Health Centre Research Institute. Reporting to the Scientific Director and Associate Director, the incumbent will collaborate nationally and internationally to identify research priorities, develop funding opportunities, establish partnerships, and translate research outcomes to improve Canadian health. The role is integral in achieving the mission, mandate, and values of the Institute while maintaining high standards of excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Project Planning & Management (50%):

  • Plan, design, draft, adapt, and review funding opportunities in line with ISCR priorities

  • Collaborate with ISCR team to plan, implement, and evaluate projects, programs, and activities, including special projects

  • Lead assigned projects, supervise timelines and deliverables to ensure on-time completion

Scientific Strategy (30%):

  • Identify research priorities, opportunities, gaps, and challenges within the Canadian research ecosystem

  • Provide scientific expertise, stay current with developments, and integrate findings into ISCR priorities and programs

  • Review publications, abstracts, and scientific documents for relevance to the Institute’s mandate

  • Analyze research impact and develop tools to collect feedback and data from researchers

  • Lead knowledge mobilization activities across Canada

Liaison, Communication & Partnerships (20%):

  • Serve as a spokesperson for the Institute with communities, partners, and media

  • Establish and maintain partnerships with stakeholders locally, nationally, and internationally

  • Prepare and review internal and external communications including environmental scans, briefs, reports, and presentations

  • Represent the Institute at working group meetings of CIHR and other stakeholder forums

Qualifications & Skills:

  • PhD in a field related to ISCR’s mandate (heart, lung, brain [stroke], blood, vessels, intensive care, sleep)

  • Excellent oral and written communication in French and English

  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision

  • Knowledge of Canadian funding agencies and CIHR operations is an asset

  • Understanding of Canadian research, innovation, training landscape, and key stakeholders

  • Strong organizational and management skills, discretion in handling confidential information

  • Microsoft Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Additional Information:

  • Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9:00 – 17:00, minimum 3 days on-site, hybrid possible
