Description:
The Salvation Army is seeking a Cook for the NWT Resource Centre in Yellowknife, NT, responsible for preparing and serving nutritious meals for 60–100 people twice daily.
The position plays a key role in fulfilling The Salvation Army’s mission to serve and support vulnerable individuals within the community.
Create daily menu plans based on available food donations.
Prepare and serve nutritious meals for lunch and supper in compliance with food service and safety standards.
Provide serving assistance to shelter staff during weekends.
Conduct meal prep for shift changes and make efficient use of food resources.
Collaborate with community groups and Salvation Army staff for special meals and events.
Serve meals in accordance with health and safety regulations.
Clean and sanitize dishes, cookware, utensils, tables, and kitchen floors after each service.
Maintain a high level of cleanliness and organization in the kitchen, storage areas, coolers, and freezers.
Supervise kitchen assistants, volunteers, and students.
Report equipment repairs or replacements to the Operations Manager.
Ensure compliance with sanitation, safety, and food storage standards.
Organize and direct the work of support staff as required.
Perform additional duties as assigned.

Ability to stand, cut, and chop for extended periods.
Strong English communication, organizational, and time management skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Knowledgeable in food preparation and kitchen equipment operation.
Self-directed and motivated work ethic.
Food Safe Certification (mandatory).
High School graduate.
Completion of recognized Cooking Certification.
1–3 years of related experience in high-volume cooking.
Experience with nutritional needs of homeless and addicted populations.
WHMIS and First Aid considered assets.
Criminal Record Check required.
Valid Vulnerable Sector Screening.
Valid First Aid certificate.
WHMIS certification.
Completion of The Salvation Army online abuse prevention training.
Clear internal abuse registry check.
Participation in mandatory yearly training.
Casual, on-call union position with no guaranteed hours.
Prolonged standing and use of sharp utensils – potential for cuts.
Exposure to high-heat cooking equipment – potential for burns.
Flexible hours may be required, including weekends and holidays.
May involve stressful situations while assisting staff who work with high-demand clients.
Considered a “ministry” position, requiring spiritual sensitivity and resilience.
Hourly Rate: $24.18 – $26.06 per hour (CBA scale).
Placement within the range depends on experience, qualifications, internal equity, and market factors.
