Baycrest Health Sciences is seeking Clinical Externs to join its specialized care teams, supporting geriatric and post-acute patients under the supervision of registered nursing staff.
This opportunity is ideal for nursing students (BScN or RPN) looking to gain hands-on experience in a leading healthcare environment that integrates patient care, research, and education focused on brain health and aging.
The externship offers experience across various hospital units, emphasizing compassionate, evidence-based care while developing clinical and interpersonal skills in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team.
Transitional Care Unit (3 East): Supports patients awaiting discharge and promotes health maintenance during transitions.
Inpatient Psychiatry (4 East): Provides short-term mental health assessment and management for older adults (65+).
Behavioral Neurology (4 West): Treats adults with neurological and behavioural complexities to improve quality of life.
Complex Continuing Care (5 West & 6 East): Manages patients with chronic medical conditions in a non-acute setting.
Palliative Care (6 West): Offers pain and symptom management with emotional and spiritual support for end-of-life care.
High Tolerance Rehabilitation (7 West): Provides therapy and rehabilitation for musculoskeletal conditions to restore independence.
Assist with patient assessments and activities of daily living
Participate in care planning and evaluation
Support mobility, lifting, transferring, and ambulation per policy
Promote skin integrity and prevent pressure injuries
Maintain a safe, clean, and hazard-free environment
Document and report care activities accurately
Perform delegated tasks under supervision, within knowledge and skill limits
Support patient independence, dignity, and cultural well-being
Foster communication with patients, families, and care teams
Nursing student in:
2nd–4th year of a CNO-approved BScN program, or
Final year of a CNO-approved RPN program
Demonstrated academic excellence
Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices
Recent clinical placement experience preferred
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team
Experience with cognitive impairment, dementia, or responsive behaviours preferred
Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
Basic computer skills (Meditech, Microsoft Word, Excel preferred)
