The Salvation Army in Canada, one of the nation’s most trusted and longstanding charitable organizations, is seeking a compassionate and responsible Residential Worker B to join their team in Courtenay, BC. For over 130 years, The Salvation Army has served individuals and families in need across Canada and Bermuda, providing essentials such as food, clothing, and shelter, while also offering support for employment, addiction recovery, and family challenges.
As a Residential Worker B, you will ensure a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for residents, staff, and visitors. You will play an active role in providing emergency, transitional, and supportive housing services while exemplifying The Salvation Army’s core values of hope, service, dignity, and stewardship.
Resident Care and Supervision:
Serve as a positive role model by building professional and respectful relationships with residents.
Supervise and monitor residents to ensure adherence to house rules and policies.
Conduct safety checks to maintain a secure and supportive environment.
Handle conflicts with tact and assist in conflict resolution when necessary.
Maintain accurate records, logs, and reports in accordance with organizational standards.
Assist in daily routines, including food preparation and meal service for clients.
Client Intake and Support:
Receive client inquiries via phone or in-person and conduct intake interviews.
Complete all intake documentation and orient new residents to shelter policies and procedures.
Provide information and referrals to community services and resources as needed.
Support clients with empathy, ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect throughout their stay.
Household and Facility Maintenance:
Clean and maintain resident rooms, washrooms, kitchens, lounges, offices, and communal spaces.
Prepare rooms and beds for incoming residents; pack belongings for discharged clients.
Perform laundry services and basic building maintenance as required.
Collect and dispose of waste, ensuring a clean and hygienic environment at all times.
Health, Safety, and Compliance:
Follow all workplace safety standards, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Contribute to maintaining a safe facility (e.g., clear fire exits, manage spills, ensure unobstructed pathways).
Adhere to The Salvation Army’s mission, ethical standards, and Christian values in all duties.
Education:
High School Diploma required.
Post-secondary certificate (1–2 years) in a Social Services-related field preferred.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience:
1–2 years of prior experience in a social service or residential care environment.
Experience supporting marginalized individuals or those in crisis is highly valued.
Licenses and Certifications:
Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (mandatory).
Clearance from The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
Current certifications in Standard First Aid/CPR, FoodSafe, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.
Annual completion of WHMIS and Praesidum Academy training modules.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Excellent organizational and administrative skills with attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Demonstrates empathy, patience, and respect toward all clients.
Strong sense of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
Physically capable of performing tasks such as lifting up to 25 lbs and climbing stairs.
Flexible, reliable, and motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
On-site residential environment with exposure to challenging situations, unpleasant odors, and occasionally aggressive behaviors.
Minimal travel required.
Must be comfortable working with vulnerable populations and maintaining composure in crisis situations.
Hourly Rate: $24.73 – $25.73
