Description:

The Salvation Army in Canada, a respected faith-based organization serving communities for over 130 years, is seeking dedicated Residential Support Workers to provide compassionate care and support for individuals in community residential programs. This role involves ensuring safety, promoting personal development, and fostering independence for residents while upholding the values of dignity, service, and stewardship.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Safety & Crisis Management: Ensuring residents and staff operate in a safe environment, following all safety regulations, crisis intervention protocols, and proper use of PPE. Duties include conducting safety checks, monitoring facilities, providing transportation safely, and responding appropriately to emergencies.

  • Health & Medical Support: Administering and documenting medications accurately, recognizing and reporting signs of abuse or neglect, and providing emotional support. Preparing nutritionally balanced meals that meet dietary and medical requirements in line with Canadian Dietary Standards.

  • Person-Centered Planning: Supporting individuals by implementing personalized development plans, gathering information on their goals, and assisting in achieving desired outcomes. Communicating key updates to coordinators for continuity of care.

  • Personal Development & Daily Living: Encouraging independence by assisting with daily activities such as hygiene, meal preparation, grocery shopping, laundry, and housekeeping. Promoting decision-making, social interaction, and community participation while role modeling positive behavior.

  • Communication & Relationships: Maintaining professional and respectful communication with residents, families, colleagues, and community agencies. Encouraging positive community interactions and fostering supportive relationships.

  • Administrative Duties: Documenting daily activities, incidents, and financial transactions accurately. Ensuring proper vehicle maintenance records, adherence to agency policies, and compliance with Residential Care Licensing and Department of Families’ requirements.

  • Housekeeping & Facility Management: Performing necessary housekeeping, reporting maintenance needs, and ensuring the residence meets safety and licensing standards.

Working Conditions:

  • Work primarily in community residential settings with moderate exposure to challenging conditions such as verbal abuse, behavioral outbursts, infectious diseases, or physical hazards.

  • May involve isolated shifts, on-call responsibilities, exposure to hazardous cleaning supplies, or emergency situations.

  • Physical demands include lifting up to 40 pounds, manual transfers, frequent standing, walking, and light housekeeping duties.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent.

  • Valid Manitoba Class V driver’s license.

  • Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Registry Check, and Adult Abuse Registry Check required.

  • Experience in a related field is an asset but not mandatory.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong observation, listening, and judgment skills with the ability to assess and respond to residents’ needs.

  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills with the ability to remain calm in challenging situations.

  • Basic computer literacy, reading, writing, and arithmetic skills.

  • Ability to multi-task, demonstrate creativity, and foster independence among residents.

  • Physically capable of meeting job demands including lifting, household maintenance, and resident support.
