Description:
The Salvation Army in Canada is seeking a compassionate and skilled Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE – Supply) to join their childcare team in Toronto, ON. This position is responsible for creating a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment that fosters children’s overall development in line with the How Does Learning Happen? (HDLH) framework. The RECE will support children’s spiritual, social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and creative development, while ensuring a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all.
As part of The Salvation Army’s mission to provide hope, dignity, and service to communities, the RECE will design responsive and play-based learning experiences, support Early Childhood Assistants, and collaborate with families to ensure the holistic growth of every child.
Key Responsibilities:
Plan, implement, and evaluate age-appropriate, play-based programs aligned with HDLH and CCEYA guidelines.
Foster children’s cognitive, language, social, emotional, and physical development while promoting inclusivity and diversity.
Maintain health, safety, and welfare standards, including administering medication, accommodating allergies, and implementing preventative safety measures.
Provide responsive care through positive guidance, active listening, and conflict resolution.
Ensure the physical environment and equipment are safe, clean, and developmentally appropriate.
Build meaningful relationships with children and families, orient parents to the program, and connect families to community resources.
Maintain accurate records such as attendance, incidents, medical administration, and facility safety checks.
Collaborate with colleagues, attend staff meetings, and contribute to continuous quality improvement.
Qualifications and Requirements:
ECE Diploma with registration in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators.
Minimum 1 year of relevant childcare/early learning experience.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Standard First Aid & CPR Level C certification.
Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
Completion of required Salvation Army training courses (e.g., Armatus abuse prevention, health & safety).
Food Handler’s Certificate and valid driver’s license with access to a vehicle considered assets.
Ability to work with minimal supervision, remain calm under pressure, and maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
Demonstrated patience, empathy, and a nurturing approach when working with children.
Compensation and Working Conditions:
Hourly wage range: $23.28 – $29.10 (up to $34.92 maximum).
Part-time, on-site role requiring flexibility in shifts, occasional after-hours staff meetings, and ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
Work may involve exposure to communicable diseases, loud noise, tantrums, and other challenges inherent to childcare.
Professional development opportunities available with a minimum of 8 hours per year.
