Description:

Seaspan ULC, a leader in advanced shipbuilding and marine engineering, is seeking a skilled Quality Control Technician II (Paint) to join its North Vancouver facility. This position plays a vital role in ensuring the quality and integrity of paint systems across all stages of vessel construction. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise in coating inspection, quality assurance, and marine manufacturing standards, particularly aligned with NACE and AMPP protocols.

The successful candidate will carry out comprehensive paint inspections, ensure compliance with specifications and class requirements, and contribute to continuous improvement in production processes. Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct formal inspections of paint systems and activities across multiple stages of vessel construction.

  • Test paint batches for consistency in color, viscosity, durability, and finish quality.

  • Perform daily inspections following Inspection and Test Plans (ITP) for Pre-Blast, Pre-Paint, and Final Paint stages.

  • Review contract specifications, SOPs, and class rules to ensure paint quality aligns with project requirements.

  • Identify and report nonconformities, initiate corrective actions, and provide technical direction to shop personnel.

  • Develop and refine Inspection and Test Plans specific to painting systems.

  • Produce final inspection reports and maintain detailed documentation as objective quality evidence for customers.

  • Collaborate with supervisors and quality teams to improve in-process performance and minimize defects.

  • Conduct periodic supplier audits to ensure adherence to contract and quality standards.

  • Attend inspections with owners, clients, and regulatory authorities, providing accurate and professional representation.

  • Support continuous process improvement initiatives in paint and coating operations.


Qualifications & Skills Required:

  • Certification: AMPP/NACE Level 2 (minimum required).

  • Education: Diploma in a relevant technical discipline such as Marine, Mechanical, Electrical, Naval Architecture, or Geomatics; or a Red Seal Trade Certificate.

  • Experience: 5–8 years of experience in shipbuilding, heavy manufacturing, or related sectors; prior QA/QC or surveying experience highly desirable.

  • Technical Expertise:

    • Understanding of NDT techniques and paint system applications in marine construction.

    • Proficiency in developing Quality and Inspection Plans (ITPs).

    • Strong command of reading and interpreting technical drawings and specifications.

    • Experience with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, SharePoint).

  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication, analytical, and report-writing skills. Strong judgment, independence, and attention to detail.
